Another technical issue with the thermal performance of the LFP cells in motor-cycles. The overheating because of   the direct sunshine.

The technical comment follows   the analysis presented in relation to the air flow.   The similar issue of the deficient thermal handling of the whole battery pack is related to the heat caused by direct sun shine.

The photo shows a quite typical situation. In spring or in autumn, the temperature of the air is still quite low but the direct sunshine is already quite powerful. Imagine the motorcycle parked outside for some time. In this scenario one side of the motorcycle is cooled by the cold air breeze – perhaps with temperature of +10°C (green arrows). The other side of the motorcycle and also the battery pack is under the direct sunshine (red arrows). If the color of the pack is black, the temperature may easily reach +40°C and more.

The result is obvious: one part of the cells will have completely different performance.

In both scenarios   the attempts to balance the cells are completely futile.   First you need to reach the same temperature of the cells. 

The same measures need to be applied: proper insulation against the outside temperature differences and internal air circulation co that the cells are ventilated equally. Here also the question to consider is the color of the battery pack. Perhaps the black color is not the best color to use.

The second photo. GWL’s comments: truly innovative design battery-powered motorbike, with a large size pack, evidently with some issues that need to be handled. This kind of battery pack will suffer from   immense cooling by the airflow   generated by the motorcycle movement and also by the air around the front wheel (green arrows). Also,   the black color of the pack   is not ideal for thermal performance.
